To the human eye, the print is primarily aesthetically appealing and hard to believe to be true. But the zebras have some serious and much more practical reasons to wear the stripes than we think. Through time (over a century), different theories about the striped coat pattern has been debated. Among others is the camouflage theory which suggests that the stripes makes it harder for predators like the lion to see the zebra e.g when standing in tall grass. Still, scientists are not sure about the exact origins and functions of zebra stripes – it is somehow still a big mystery. Many of the suggested theories have been dismissed over the years. Up until now!
